Newcity is currently seeking art critics and journalists based in São Paulo who are familiar with the gallery and museum scene. Our art coverage aims to be inclusive, from independent culture producers to mainstream blockbuster exhibitors. Newcity’s art criticism is literary, insightful, informative, accessible, and often expresses a writerly or critical voice.
Reviews, News, Profiles, and Features: Newcity publishes art exhibition reviews, art scene news, artist and gallery profiles, and features.
Length: Reviews and news are 250-350 words, profiles are 450 words, and features are 750–850 words.
Compensation: All payments are made electronically via Paypal, and based in U.S. dollars (though the service automatically converts to your home currency). Please expect compensation the month following publication.
Pitching: Newcity contributing writers work closely with our editors. We request that contributors pitch review, profile and feature ideas before writing the articles. Our editors will also send an assignment list to contributors with options for reviews. Please contact Brian Hieggelke, editor, to pitch an article at [email protected].
Editing: All articles are copy edited and fact-checked by our editors; however, we require that writers be responsible for their contributions. We rely on our writers to report facts and opinions with honesty. Please read the Newcity Style Guide for technical and formatting requirements.
Images: Writers are responsible for acquiring images from the gallery or artist, and must send the images with the assigned text to the editor.
Conflict of Interest Policy and Ethics: Newcity recognizes that art writers are likely employed in other arts arenas. In order to avoid potential conflicts of interest, Newcity requires that contributing writers do not pitch or write about artists or venues that employ them on a part-time, full-time or voluntary basis. This ensures journalistic independence and credibility.
